One of 3 Cuthbert Broderick Leeds masterpieces, the corn exchange sits close Kirkgate Market at the south east of the city centre. It was originally used for trading corn, starting business in 1864, but fell into disrepair over the years till it was renovated in the 1980’s to become a shopping centre. The centre was filled with independent clothes and novelty shops and attracted a young “emo” crowd. More recently, the Exchange has become a food emporium and location for creative independent retailers, causing protests from the former occupants and their customers. The building itself is a marvel, with 3 levels, the higher level being a round balcony full of shops.
