The Civic Hall
The Civic Hall is home to the city council and on of the architectural highlights of Millennium Square. Building was completed in 1933, Vincent Harris won a competition to design it in 1926. This was the era of the great depression, so its construction was mainly carried out by people who would have been unemployed but for this project. The main features are the twin towers and the golden owls that adorn it, these stand proudly at the top of each tower and there are also 2 huge owls on ground level plinths. The Victoria Quarter
This is the King Edward Street, on the south edge of the splendid Victoria Quarter. The amazing ornate brickwork and long arcades are the signature of this jewel in Leeds’ shopping crown. In here you will find Harvey Nichols, Vivienne Westwood and many other designer clothes shops. This image shows off the grand gables along the tops of the walls, which were caught in the bright autumn sunshine in 2008. The stationary man in the middle makes a huge difference to the scene; a still figure in the mist of a moving mass. Adelphi and Leeds Bridge Building
This impressive image showcases a couple of the finest buildings south of the river in Leeds. The Adelphi is a huge traditional pub, which still has 4 separate rooms, contrary to most pubs where multiple rooms were converted into one large room. It was of course a Tetley pub, it’s right outside the Brewery, but these days it’s taken on a wider brief, serving up several hand pulled real ales, continental lagers, wines and food. The Leeds Bridge Building, with it’s curved, triangular appearance, is reminiscent of the Flat Iron Building on Broadway, New York; obviously not as tall, but just as pleasing to the eye. In the gap between the two, we see part of the world famous Tetley Brewery. The future of brewing on this site is in the balance, who knows how long Leeds’ most famous drink will be made here? Clarence Dock Tower
The tower at the end of Clarence Dock stands at 218 feet tall and is the main emblem of the whole leisure development. 1 City Square
1 city square is probably the most recognisable office building in the city centre, with its large glass front, exposed lifts and pagoda-like roof, reminiscent of Lord’s Cricket Ground. This was taken with the camera at pavement level with an “ultra wide” lens to enhance the feeling of height in the shot. We can see one of the many the bird sculptures half way up on the right side, the pagoda roof brightly lit at the top of the image and many floors of offices behind the glass façade. Leeds City Museum Mono
This is one of the three major buildings architect Cuthbert Broderick designed in Leeds city centre, along with the Town Hall and Corn Exchange. Built in 1862, this was originally the Leeds Institute Building which provided education for the city’s industrial workers, and until its transformation in 2005, it also was used as the Civic Theatre for amateur theatrical performances. Entrance is free and it is well worth going in to see the massive map of the Leeds City area on the floor of the main auditorium, along with the definitive history of the city. This image is taken from the side of the Electric Press building, the main colour that is present in this shot is yellow. All other colours have been removed except Magenta, which you can see on the O2 at the top left of the building. Back Albion Street
This is a small street off the Headrow, running parallel to Albion Street. There is very little of interest on the road, but on this overcast day, the street markings really stood out from the gloom. Using an ultra wide lens and a very low tripod, you can make objects in the foreground look incredibly large compared to their surroundings – as can be seen by the triangle in this image. Anyone taking this image today would be horrified to see that road works have cut through the front left side of the triangle, leaving an unsightly black patch on its edge.
